Reflections on Psalm 23

“Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies; thou anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows.” Psalm 23:5

Everybody experiences life in a little different way. At the end of today, some will feel this was the worst day of their lives. Others will thank God they did not have as bad a day, as they first thought. Others will come to the conclusion it was just a day and on to the next one. Yet others will feel this was the best day of their lives. Why such varied opinions? It all depends how each person responses to the uncertainties of life and what decisions were made.

The most comforting Psalm in the Bible is Psalm 23. People seek it in times of comfort and celebration. When tough choices have to be made, this psalm has comforted many a troubled soul. When confusion seeks to crowd your heart, knowing that God walks with you each step of the way will make any soul sing. What is our assurance? Because God has anointed our heads with the oil of gladness which can never be taken away.

In the Bible, when a person was anointed with oil they were set apart from the rest of the community for God’s purpose. Some became rulers, others servants, still others prophets and providers of the people. All had a purpose to lead people into a deeper relationship with God.

In the Christian Community, all who believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior are the anointed ones of God. This can happen in many different ways, but with one result, being set apart by God for his purpose. In the midst of our daily labors, we develop a deeper relationship with God and our faith becomes our strength. When you see each day as blessed by God, it will be the best day ever.

Dear Lord, thank you for reminding me that you have claimed as your own and anointing me with your presence. May my daily walk with you; bring me into a deeper love with you. May the work I do each day, help others to know your love. Amen.
